Description
Original Bakelite cigarette container. Suez Meisterklasse Zigarettenfabrik A Weber - Frankfurt a.M. It would have held 25 cigarettes. It is in good condition with light wear. It measures about 4 3/4" by 2 1/2".
Egyptian cigarettes became very fashionable as a luxury cigarette in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were in such high demand that many counterfeit companies appeared, offering cheaper and lower quality tobacco and using brand names and packaging meant to evoked Egyptian themes (the most notable being Camel). Egyptian tobacco popularity declined a bit after WWI, but the industry continued until it was nationalized by the Egyptian government in 1952.
